Frequently asked questions
Common Questions
Why is it called inland marine if it has nothing to do with boats?
The name comes from the early days of marine insurance, which covered cargo shipped by sea. As goods began moving over land, coverage for property in transit and on the move became known as inland marine.
Doesn't my commercial property policy already cover my equipment?
Commercial property policies typically focus on property at your listed business location and may offer only limited coverage elsewhere. Inland marine is designed for property that travels to job sites or is stored off premises.
Are tools stolen from my truck covered?
Commercial auto insurance covers the vehicle, but generally not the tools inside it. An inland marine policy can help cover theft of tools from a vehicle, depending on your policy terms. Some policies require the vehicle to be locked or show signs of forced entry.
Should I list each item or use blanket coverage?
Higher-value items, such as heavy equipment, are often scheduled individually with a stated value. Smaller tools may be covered under a blanket limit, sometimes with a per-item maximum. Our agents can help you choose the approach that fits your equipment.
