Tools & Equipment Insurance for Contractors

Your tools and equipment move with you from job to job, and a single break-in can stop work for days. Commercial inland marine insurance, often called a contractor’s equipment floater, helps protect tools, machinery and materials on job sites, in your vehicle and in transit, where standard property policies may offer only limited coverage.

What It Covers

  • Hand & Power Tools

Helps cover drills, saws, nail guns, pipe threaders, meters and other tools if they are stolen from a job site or a locked vehicle, or accidentally damaged, depending on the policy terms.

  • Contractor’s Equipment

Can protect larger equipment such as mini excavators, skid steers, mixers, generators, compressors and scaffolding.

  • Materials in Transit

Can help cover materials, fixtures and supplies while you haul them from the supplier to the job site.

  • Rented & Borrowed Equipment

May cover equipment you rent or borrow, like a lift or a concrete saw, while it is in your care.

Who Needs It

  • Electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians and carpenters who carry tools in a van or truck.
  • General contractors, masons and concrete contractors who own or rent heavy equipment.
  • Contractors who leave tools, equipment or materials at job sites overnight.

Optional Coverages

  • Builder’s RiskHelps protect a building under construction or renovation and the materials on site. It is usually written as its own policy and is often required by owners or lenders.
  • Installation FloaterHelps protect materials and equipment you are installing, such as an HVAC unit, a boiler or kitchen cabinets, until the job is completed and accepted.
  • Equipment Rental ExpenseCan help pay to rent replacement equipment while your covered equipment is being repaired or replaced, so the job does not stop.

Frequently asked questions

Common Questions

Are tools stolen from my van or job site covered?

They can be, depending on your policy terms. Many policies require the vehicle or job box to be locked and may require signs of forced entry, and some limit theft from vehicles left unattended overnight. It is best to review those conditions with an agent before a loss happens.

Are my employees’ tools covered too?

Some policies can include tools owned by your employees, often with a lower limit, while others cover only tools owned by the business. If your crew brings their own tools, let your agent know so the policy can be set up accordingly.

Does it cover tools that wear out or break from normal use?

No. Inland marine typically covers sudden losses such as theft, fire, collision or accidental damage, not wear and tear or gradual deterioration. Mechanical breakdown is usually excluded, although some policies offer it by endorsement.
