Back to LandscapingBusiness Owner’s Policy for Landscaping Businesses
A Business Owner’s Policy (BOP) bundles general liability and commercial property into one policy, which can be a simple way for a small landscaping company to protect its shop, office and supplies. Eligibility depends on the carrier and on the kind of work you do, and some carriers limit or exclude certain landscaping operations from a BOP.
What It Covers
General Liability
Helps protect you from third-party claims of bodily injury and property damage, such as a broken window or a damaged fence at a client’s home.
Business Personal Property
Covers office equipment, supplies and materials kept at your shop or yard. Plants and other property stored outdoors may have limited coverage.
Building Coverage
If you own your shop, garage or storage building, a BOP can help pay to repair or rebuild it after a covered loss such as fire or wind.
Business Income
Can help replace lost income and pay ongoing expenses if a covered loss, like a fire at your shop, forces you to stop operating for a while.
Who Needs It
- Small landscaping and lawn care companies with a shop, garage, yard or office.
- Landscape design businesses with an office and a small installation crew.
- Owners who want liability and property protection in one policy, if their operations qualify.
Optional Coverages
- Contractor’s Tools & EquipmentMany BOPs offer an endorsement for tools and equipment away from your premises, usually with modest limits. A larger fleet of mowers and machinery often fits better on a separate inland marine policy.
- Hired & Non-Owned AutoLiability protection when you or your crew drive personal or rented vehicles for business errands, like picking up plants or parts.
- Professional LiabilityIf you design landscapes or irrigation systems, claims that your design caused a financial loss are usually not covered by general liability. Depending on the carrier, it may be added or bought separately.

Frequently asked questions
Common Questions
Can a landscaping business get a BOP?
Often, yes, but it depends on the carrier and your operations. Lawn care and smaller landscaping companies frequently qualify, while tree removal, pesticide application or heavy excavation may require a separate general liability policy. An agent can check which carriers accept your type of work.
Does a BOP cover my trucks, mowers and crew?
Not fully. A BOP usually does not include commercial auto or workers’ compensation, which are separate policies, and equipment taken to job sites is often covered only in a limited way. Most landscapers combine a BOP or general liability with commercial auto, tools and equipment coverage and workers’ compensation.
I run my business from home. Do I still need a BOP?
A homeowners policy typically limits or excludes business property and business liability, so your equipment, supplies and claims from clients may not be covered. A BOP or a standalone general liability policy can help fill that gap. Our agents can compare both options with you.
