Commercial Vehicle Insurance for Landscaping Businesses

Your trucks and trailers carry your crew and equipment from job to job, often on busy streets with a heavy load behind them. Commercial auto insurance helps protect your business vehicles, your drivers and the people around them if there is an accident. Personal auto policies often limit or exclude coverage for vehicles used mainly for business.

What It Covers

  • Liability Coverage

Helps pay for injuries to others and damage to their property when your truck or driver is at fault, such as rear-ending a car while towing a loaded trailer.

  • Trailers

Liability usually extends to a trailer while it is attached to a covered vehicle, but damage to the trailer itself is typically covered only if the trailer is listed on the policy.

  • Collision & Comprehensive

Helps repair or replace your truck after a collision, or after theft, vandalism, fire, storms or a falling tree limb, after your deductible.

  • No-Fault (PIP)

In New York, personal injury protection helps pay medical expenses and certain lost wages for injured drivers and passengers, regardless of who caused the accident.

Who Needs It

  • Landscaping and lawn care companies with pickups, box trucks, dump trucks or vans in the business name.
  • Crews that tow open or enclosed trailers loaded with mowers and equipment.
  • Snow removal businesses that mount plows or salt spreaders on their trucks.

Optional Coverages

  • Snow Plow CoveragePlows and spreaders mounted on a truck may need to be listed to be covered for damage, and some carriers rate or restrict plowing for others. Tell your agent if your trucks plow in winter.
  • Hired & Non-Owned AutoHelps protect your business from liability when employees drive their own cars or a rented truck for work, like picking up mulch or parts. It is usually not included unless added.
  • Rental ReimbursementMay help pay for a replacement truck while a covered vehicle is being repaired, so jobs don’t stop in the middle of the season.

Frequently asked questions

Common Questions

Are the mowers and tools on my trailer covered by my auto policy?

Generally, no. Commercial auto covers the vehicle and listed trailers, not the equipment carried in or on them. Mowers, blowers and tools are typically protected with a tools and equipment (inland marine) policy.

Can I keep my pickup on a personal auto policy?

If the truck is used mainly for landscaping work, titled to the business or used to tow equipment, a personal policy may limit or deny coverage. A commercial auto policy is usually the better fit. Our agents can review how the vehicle is used and titled.

Are my seasonal drivers covered?

Typically, drivers you permit to use your vehicles are covered, but carriers usually review driving records and may require every driver to be listed. Add new seasonal drivers before they get behind the wheel, and let us know when they leave.
