Tools & Equipment Insurance for Landscaping Businesses

Your mowers, trimmers, blowers and compact machines are how you get paid, and they spend most of the day on trailers and job sites. Tools and equipment coverage, also called inland marine or a contractor’s equipment floater, helps protect that equipment against theft and damage wherever it goes. Commercial auto and property policies typically do not cover it once it leaves your shop.

What It Covers

  • Theft

Can help replace equipment stolen from a truck, a trailer or a job site, such as a trailer of mowers taken overnight. Some policies require the trailer to be locked or show signs of forced entry.

  • Mowers & Power Equipment

Helps protect zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, edgers and aerators.

  • Larger Machinery

Coverage for skid steers, compact track loaders, mini excavators, trenchers and stump grinders, usually listed individually with a stated value.

  • Damage in Transit & on Site

May cover damage when the trailer is in an accident, a machine overturns while loading or equipment is hit by fire or vandalism, depending on the policy.

Who Needs It

  • Lawn care and mowing companies with mowers and handheld equipment on open trailers.
  • Landscapers and hardscapers that own or rent skid steers, mini excavators and plate compactors.
  • Snow removal businesses with snow blowers, walk-behind spreaders and other seasonal equipment.

Optional Coverages

  • Rented & Leased EquipmentMay cover equipment you rent for a job, like a sod cutter or a mini excavator, which many rental companies require you to insure.
  • Equipment Rental ExpenseCan help pay to rent replacement equipment while a covered mower or machine is repaired or replaced, so your crew keeps working.
  • Employees’ ToolsTools owned by your crew members are often excluded or limited unless they are added by endorsement. Ask about it if your workers bring their own equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Common Questions

A trailer full of mowers was stolen overnight. Would this cover it?

It may, if the equipment is covered under your policy and the loss meets its terms. Some policies have conditions for theft from unattended vehicles or trailers, such as requiring locks or signs of forced entry. Hitch locks, wheel locks and secure overnight storage can also help reduce the risk.

Should I list each mower or use a blanket limit?

Higher-value machines, such as zero-turn mowers, skid steers and mini excavators, are often scheduled individually with a stated value. Smaller handheld tools can be covered under a blanket limit, sometimes with a per-item maximum. Our agents can help you choose what fits your equipment.

Is my equipment covered while it’s parked at my shop or garage?

Many inland marine policies cover equipment both on and off your premises, but it depends on the policy. Equipment kept at your shop may also be covered under a property policy or a Business Owner’s Policy. We can review both so there are no gaps or overlaps.
